Agios Nikolaos is a coastal town and municipality in the north-east of the Greek island of Crete with 27,000 inhabitants. In the centre of the town is Lake Voulismeni. The town’s history dates back to the Bronze Age. The name Agios Nikolaos means Saint Nicholas. It is a common place name in Greece and Cyprus, as Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors. Today the town is a major tourist centre in Crete.
Agios Nikolaos is the capital of the Lasithi province. This small, quiet fishing port transforms into a leading international holiday resort for at least half a year during the season.
In Agios Nikolaos you will find countless shops with a wide range of leather goods, jewellery and products from local artisans. There is a market near the local hospital where you can bargain. Lake Voulismeni is located near the port. Although the lake is said to be bottomless, its depth was measured at 63 meters a few years ago – when Jacques Cousteau pulled the remains of a German tank from the water.
In the local museum, you can see, among other things, treasures from the Minoan Empire. In short, Agios Nikolaos has something to offer everyone – enjoy the rich culture, beaches and vibrant nightlife.
Agios Nikolaos is a tourist town that serves as a center for the approximately twenty small villages and farms that make up this part of Lassithi. Tourist attractions include the small lagoon at Lake Voulismeni, small beaches in the town, the small island of Agioi Pantes, the archaeological museum, the local flora exhibition “Iris” and numerous fairs.
Tourism is predominantly Western European, with Greek tourism concentrated in mid-August. The lagoon has a small park with a walkway, traditional fishing boats, waterfowl, an amphitheater and many cafes. The modern town of Agios Nikolaos became internationally known in the 1960s, when it was “discovered” by famous film directors (Jules Dassin, Walt Disney, etc.), BBC producers and many others. This was when the area began to develop rapidly as a tourist destination.
Agios Nikolaos is accessible from the mainland and all of Europe via Heraklion International Airport and the numerous daily ferry lines in Heraklion, 64 kilometers away. Passengers arrive via Sitia Airport in eastern Crete, where they board a domestic or charter flight, or via the town’s port, 67 kilometers away. Recently, the town has become host to a department of the Hellenic Mediterranean University, which offers tourism-related courses.
Rent
Many foreign residents live here for several months of the year, thanks to the ideal climate conditions. Crete is known for its 350 days of sunshine a year. The property can also be used as a rental investment. The properties can be managed by a local management company, responsible for the maintenance and management of the apartments.
